Elezan Sabantuy 2017
I was blessed with the good fortune of being able to attend the annual Sabantuy in Elezan, Penza, in the Russian Federation. Elezan is the largest Tatar village in Russia with roughly 16,000 inhabitants. This village also has many mosques, I believe about a dozen, the newest one is gleaming and sizable. Many women in Elezan wear scarves and it would be accurate to say it is a conservative religious community. It is also visibly wealthy, with a hard working population and high quality homes to match. The people of Elezan are very friendly and speak the Tatar language freely. I hope to return someday. It's a very pretty and interesting place.
