Kazan 1988

Pictures from Kazan in 1988

A group of Tatars from Helsinki was organizing a trip to visit Kazan. They sent along an invitation to Tatars in California to join them.

I flew to Helsinki, spent some time there and in Northern Finland, then on the Tolstoy Express train to Moscow. Flight from Moscow to Kazan.

This was during the time of Gorbachev. It was still very much a Communist State.

Polish and Lithuanian Tatars were some of the early Muslims in America. Time magazine actually wrote about their mosque already in 1937:

Do you know what have become of their descendants, is there still a Polish/Lithuanian Tatar community in the U.S.?
