A Tatar family fleeing from hunger in the Volga area, probably in the 1920's. The inscription in German says: "Russia: Hunger: A family of hunger refugees from the Tatar Republic (Volga).
I should add my photo of myself. "A Tatar American visits Tatarstan in 1989 and is compelled to bring a suitcase of food so he doesn't have to spend half a day in line for horrible food." The Tatars from Finland told me to bring my own snacks. "You will have a very difficult time finding something to eat in Kazan", they told me. I wasn't starving like the poor folks above, but it was a lesson.
